Let me say something that might make some photographers nervous: the world does not need another family photo of everyone standing in a field, smiling at the camera. I mean it kindly. Those photos are fine. They’re safe. And that’s exactly the problem — they look like everyone else’s, which means ten years from now, you’ll struggle to remember who your family actually was in that season.

When I say creative family photography, I don’t mean undefined chaos. I don’t mean awkward props or forced poses. I mean a session that’s built around who your family actually is — your aesthetic, your energy, your inside jokes and obsessions and the way your kids run instead of walk everywhere they go.
For this family, “creative” meant leaning into an 80s-inspired downtown editorial. High-waisted jeans. Blazers. Striped tees. A color-block baby jacket straight out of a vintage sportswear catalog. A leopard skirt. Platform white heels on a mom who absolutely owned every sidewalk she walked on. They showed up as a unit with a fully realized vision and my job was simply to put a frame around it.

You’re doing it for fifteen years from now, when your youngest is heading off somewhere and you’re standing in a quiet house trying to remember what this season felt like. You’re doing it for your kids, who will one day look at these images and understand — maybe for the first time — that their parents were actual people with style and humor and a whole personality outside of just being mom and dad.
The families who choose creative, out-of-the-box sessions aren’t being self-indulgent. They’re being intentional. They’re saying: this is who we are right now, in this specific and unrepeatable version of our family — and we want proof.

Start With a Concept, Not Just an Outfit
Before you think about what to wear, think about what era, feeling, or aesthetic speaks to your family. Vintage Americana? Moody Pacific Northwest? 80s downtown editorial? Urban cool with a hint of chaos? Your concept shapes everything — outfits, location, time of day, even the edit.
Pick a Location That Has Character
Downtown architecture, rooftops, urban parks at dusk, industrial corridors, fields with actual texture — locations with built-in visual interest do half the work. The best family sessions feel like they could be anywhere and everywhere at once. Think cinematic, not suburban.
Let Your Kids Be Props — But Real Ones
The ice cream cone that ends up everywhere. The kite that keeps crashing. The toddler who refuses to walk and demands to be carried. Those aren’t problems to manage — they’re the whole story. The best creative family photography is built around what actually happens, not what you planned.
Dress With Intention, Not Matchy-Matchy
Coordinated doesn’t mean identical. Think about a color palette or a vibe rather than a uniform. Stripes + blazers + leopard print + a color-block windbreaker? Works brilliantly when it’s all building toward the same energy. Give your kids something to express, not just something to wear.
Book at Golden Hour and Commit to It
Nothing — and I mean nothing — transforms a creative family session like golden hour light. It turns city sidewalks into something cinematic, makes every surface glow, and creates a warmth in the final images that daytime simply cannot replicate. Worth every scheduling negotiation it takes.
WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WALK AWAY WITH
This family walked away with images that look like a movie still, a fashion editorial, and a home video all at once. There’s the ice cream moment that nobody staged — the baby’s entire face going toward the cone while everyone laughs. The kite tangled in the dusk with the skyline glowing behind them. The mom on a crosswalk at golden hour, backlit and blazer-clad, looking like she owns the entire city. And she does, by the way.
