Ray of Sunshine, Santa Barbara, CA

Go create magic. Go make art.

Find someone or something that inspires you to the point where you have to stop what you’re doing and CREATE!

That’s how it happened with this stellar shoot.

It was not planned.

It was not styled.

It just happened.

And it was magic.

Meet Randall.

He was the magic. The inspiration.

He was a literal ray of sunshine.

His smile, his personality, his freaking bright yellow pants! (You’ve got to check out these Hammies here everyone needs a pair)

I met Randall by pure coincidence and we had an instant connection. I was walking downtown Santa Barbara scoping out shooting locations for my session the following day. I got lured into this roller skating shop Xanadu, by some shiny disco quads. I was infatuated with them.

In I prance, and there I discover something even shinier… Randall.

He was pure sunshine! I thought he worked there so I was asking him all these questions about the Moxi rollers. Turns out he did not!  But he was so kind and warm about it, that I thought “How cool would it be to photograph this guy?!” so I asked him.

I told him I was free the rest of the afternoon and would love to photograph him on his quads wherever he liked that afternoon. He said sure, but I could tell he didn’t think it would actually happen. So I said I am serious!!!  And he said he was too.

Maybe you’re thinking I’m crazy at this point…like this is the start of a true crime podcast episode. But it was magic. Sometimes you have to throw out reason and run with your instinct. I HAD to get Randall on the other side of my lens.

He said he would message me when he got home. I wasn’t sure if this would really pan out, but loved the excitement of a unique shoot and experience to capture the essence of Randall.

To my delight, he messaged me asking what color Hammies he should wear,

I picked yellow.

An hour after bumping into each other in a roller skate shop, we met up in an empty parking lot that he loves to skate in.

He played his music and just skated.

The result was magic.

Here’s your cue to go find some spontaneous sunshine with your art.

Intimacy has the ability to show up in every part of your life. From the conversations you have, to the hugs you share, to the unspoken energy. It’s there and it’s my favorite place to be. I seek to be in the wave of intimacy when my hand and eye meet another.  I seek to be in the intimate adage of verbal and physical transactions.
