You know I am sucker for subtleness. I want you to feel like you are in the moment with me and my subject, and using subtle themes or props can help achieve this. Unnecessary props or colors that do not feel “natural” to the situation being photographed can take away from the photoshoot. I aim to make it flow… to make it feel as balanced and as natural as possible. For example, this classic Christmas motherhood session was subtly decorated and styled. There is a clear theme, but it’s gentle and feels realistic.

So, how do you create a themed shoot that feels intentional and creative, without being too much? Let’s dive into how you can nail the subtly, balanced theme.

1. Classic Colors
I thoroughly enjoy styling with classic and timeless elements. I chose neutral colors / vintage elements instead of bold and trendy props to keep with the subtle theme. Consider the background and textures within the images and what that will convey in the storytelling.

I look for inspiration from iconic photography styles and share images and inspo with my clients beforehand to build wardrobes and find props if it’s heavily themed like this one. Using classic pieces, such as simple clothing (plain white/cream dresses, tailored suits, or elegant dresses), that don’t scream a specific theme, but still give off the vibe. Play around with textures and accessories that help tie into the mood.

2. The Subject is the Focus
It might be a Christmas “themed” photoshoot, but the story I’m telling is the mother-daughter connection. Their interactions, expressions, and relationship are the true stars of the show, not just the tree and bows.

I use lighting and editing to highlight the subject, making them the focal point of the image.

A theme can also just be an emotional tone of the shoot like “peace, joy, or classic childhood.” One of my favorite themed shoots was an opposite of this emotion, themed “Revenge”
3. Simple Props
I love simplicity of just one or two props. Again, lean into aiming to make the session feel natural. The chosen props should seem like they would be found in this setting naturally. Less is more in this area for sure!

Using props as accents is an art, ensuring they don’t take the viewer’s attention away from the subject, but also making sure they’re not meaningless. They need to be incorporated naturally—positioned in the background or held by the subject in a relaxed, unforced way. Capture the use of them!

Encourage your clients to bring props that hold meaning or, my favorite, go photograph them in their home with all their special things- just living it out. Like this family session. Talk about an assortment of props: from a tambourine to green apples!

By keeping things classic, focusing on your subject, and using simple, meaningful props, you can achieve a look that feels unique, elevated, and subtly thematic. The beauty of a great photoshoot lies in your ability to suggest a story without spelling it out for the viewer. When you embrace the art of understatement, you’ll create something timeless and stylish.

It can be a hard balance between props, storytelling, human connection, lighting, posing and prompts; I get it! There is a lot that goes into making a shoot like this come to life and I encourage you to start simple with a good window with natural light, simple props and subtle wardrobe that compliment props or background!
