It’s an unquestionably busy time of year and we’re just gearing up. Between sports games and holidays, campfires and travel, most are trying to squeeze in family photos. As a photographer, it’s easy to get swept up into the rush and just check the boxes with each session. As a client, I’ve found myself craving that perfect family photo to send out for Christmas: a momento to encapsulate this season we’re in as a family. So whether you’re a client or a photographer, this post is for you. I also put together my top go-to poses on my instagram for an easy save on the go!

The Parachute Blanket
Do you know how many fall family sessions I’ve seen with blankets? Too many to count! Now, how many of those photoshoots did the family get up and play with the blanket? Think of your props as multi-purpose tools! Think of this session as capturing a family at play! Let your imagination run wild with that. If your photographer brings a blanket along and doesn’t suggest some playful shots, ASK and see if they’d be willing to take some action shots of your family cuddling IN the blanket or playing with it. Trust me.
Sitting & Cuddled Up
Time to get cozy. Whether your session is indoor or completely outdoors (like a beach session), creating opportunities for snuggles is essential to capture connection. I like to get siblings all squished up in there: on top of mom or dad, big siblings snuggling the youngest is a go-to favorite, squish, tickle, kiss, hug… and click click click away!
Nostalgic & Classic Favorites
Pajamas and pumpkins. Lean into the fall cliches. There’s a way to use props and styling in a way that looks classic and not cheesy. Editing can definitely help with that, but the vibe of the session sets the tone as well. Wardrobe, location, and styling will all aid in how the classic and nostalgic plays out. But a good ol’ fashioned pose is a keeper for the scrapbook. Timeless.
Staggered & Foreground
Action is KEY here. The action and main focus is up front, but we also have another story happening in the background. We can involve more than one family member in a portrait type photo. Once again, we’re back to play and imagination!
Parent Embrace & Focused Relationships
Turning to mom and dad and hugging/loving on them is one of my favorite poses. Another great variation from typical poses is focusing in on individual relationships. Dad and son, brother to sister, mother and daughter. This can be in groups or individuals. Play around with who is in the shot and keep the action going with prompts like: “show mom all the love” or for siblings “who’s the most stinky?!”
Make Art… and if you’ve got a big ol’ farmhouse, you pose in front of it.
Notice the layering. Very demure. Very mindful. haha but seriously be intentional about it.
Think about where these pictures are going to hang. Or ask your client! Have a conversation with them about it so they walk away from their session knowing they made art with you. Knowing there are masterpieces of memories on their way to be hung in their homes.
